Twenty years and 4.4 million Altimas after the first one rolled off the line at Nissan's Smyrna, Tenn., plant, the first car of the redesigned fifth-generation just rolled off line today.
Nissan bragged that this is just the first of five new vehicles due over the next five quarters -- including the new-gen Pathfinder and Rogue -- but this redesign may be the company's most important. The mid-size sedan is Nissan's bread and butter -- its best-selling and best-known model.
And in its quest to knock Camry off the throne, Nissan says it benchmarked the redesign against tough, upscale cars of similar size. including the Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series.
The governor of Tennessee, Bill Haslam, was here with Nissan brass for the roll-off of the first of the Altimas that will keep a lot of jobs in his state. He joined in the challenge to Toyota, which builds the Camry next door in Kentucky: "If I happened to work at a certain place in Georgetown (Ky.), I'd be very nervous about holding onto that No. 1."
And Bill Krueger, Nissan vice chairman, at an executive roundtable after the first car rolled off, was blunt: Certainly we did not put all this investment into the product to be No. 2.

Opting for the Rallye Redline package costs $28,745, which is only $3,750 more than the base Challenger’s MSRP. Looking over the options, it’s hard to think of the package as anything but a great value.
For that money, you get new front and rear sway bars to stiffen the chassis and make the car more corner-capable but that’s only the beginning. It also gets 42 percent firmer monotube shocks in the front and 22 percent in the rear a cold air intake, a more aggressively-geared rear axle and upgraded brakes on all four wheels.
Cosmetic upgrades also add to the car’s style with a thick red racing stripe and two matching pinstripes running the car’s length through the center. Black 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a matching red stripe further compliment the car’s special look.
Best of all, Dodge isn’t skimping on the other features you might want in a new car. This package is based off the SXT trim level, which is the high-end V6. That means it also comes with standard equipment like leather seating (heated in the front), bluetooth connectivity, electronic stability control and more.
At $28,745 (plus a $925 destination fee) you’re looking at a handsomely upgraded car that would probably cost more if you took care of the upgrades yourself.

Hyundai is reportedly considering a high-performance i30 which could compete with models from Opel and Volkswagen.
In an interview with Autocar, Hyundai Europe boss Allan Rushforth revealed the car would be a three-door hatchback with sporty styling.
Additional information is limited, but the vehicle could feature the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine from the Veloster Turbo. If this is correct, the i30 would likely have 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 265 Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque.
